Public tasks to be integrated with a renewed RIVM

vrijdag, 15 januari 2010

Public vaccine tasks of the NVI (Dutch Vaccine Institute) will be integrated with a renewed RIVM (National Institute of public health and the environment) before the end of 2010. This was published in a letter (download here, pdf) which the Minister of Public Health sent to the President of the House of Representatives today.

Last year, the minister already decided to end the vaccine production tasks of the NVI. For a small producer such as the NVI, it is becoming increasingly difficult to meet the ever more stringent quality requirements at acceptable costs. Therefor, the decision was made to sell the production facilities and services, and its support functions, to private parties by 2010 as far as possible.

Purchase, storage, distribution, research and development of vaccines continue to be public tasks and will now be integrated into the RIVM. Joining the expertise of both organizations will generate a strong public partner for science and industry. The timely availability of vaccines for, amongst others, the vaccination programme and the national programme for influenza prevention will be assured by combining purchasing tasks and by a good inventory policy.

Employees and employee representation were informed of the proposed decisions today. Some of NVI employees will start working for the renewed RIVM, others will become employees of private companies. Consultation with the trade unions about a social plan will take place.
