Future NVI

Future of the NVI is being explored

In February 2009, the Minister of public health, welfare and sport, sent a letter to the Tweede Kamer (e.g. House of Commons) in which he stated that the tasks of the Netherlands Vaccine Institute (NVI) would be altered. The main change is that the vaccine production tasks of the NVI will be disposed of. This because, for a very small vaccine producer suchs as the NVI, it is becoming increasingly difficult to meet the ever more stringent international quality requirements at acceptable costs. The Ministry will start selling the production facilities.

The purchase, distribution and storage of vaccines remain in public hands, as well as research and development. These tasks remain to be carried out for the vaccination programme (RVP) and the national programme for influenza prevention. At the moment, an exploration is conducted as to how and where these functions will be organised within the public domain.

A first step towards the actual disposal of production facilities is market research into the interest that private parties may show. These explorations help in the decision-making process on the future of the NVI: what will be taken over by private parties, what will remain a task of the Government and how can we cooperate with science and industry. We expect this decision to be made in the first six months of the year 2010. Then, the implementation of the transition process will take place. The transition process must be completed by the end of 2012.
