Change of course for the Netherlands Vaccine Institute

The Netherlands Vaccine Institute (NVI) is to change its course. The Dutch Minister of Health informed the House of Representatives of the Dutch Parliament about this on February 11th. The NVI will still focus on the purchase and distribution of vaccines and on research and development. Both tasks will be continued for the Dutch Vaccination Programme and the National Influenza Prevention Programme. However, the minister does intend to discontinue the production of a number of vaccines.

The main reason for this change of course is that it is becoming more difficult for a small vaccine manufacturer to apply the strict quality restrictions of manufacturing at acceptable costs. The investments that are needed to apply the quality restrictions on a sustainable basis are high, especially for a small organization like the NVI.

The consequences of this decision for both the organization and the employees of the NVI are being explored. The strategic change of course guarantees that the NVI will continue to play a very important role in Dutch public health and in the World Health Organization in the future.
